The National Measurement Institutes NMIs) in Europe are working to develop the measurement techniques, infrastructure, and standards to underpin regulation, industry and research in the single- and few-photon regime.

This task is being tackled through: Joint Research Projects;  local research in the  individual NMIs; other collaborative research programmes.

The work programme may be categorized as follows:

SI traceability

Characterization of single-photon sources and detectors

Development of single-photon sources and detectors

Development of measurement techniques exploiting the peculiar properties of single- and non-classically correlated photons

Application to technology:

Quantum Key Distribution

Low level light sensing

Development of standards (protocols specifying procedures for performing measurements)

Promoting single-photon metrology in relevant committees – EURAMET, CCPR
