January 15, 2018 The facility for pre-selection and free release measurement of wastes for nuclear facilities will be installed, tested and calibrated on decommissioning site during the course of this project. The facility is based on 4 plastic scintillating detectors for pre-selection of wastes, and 4 germanium detectors with mechanical cooling for free release measurement. The whole facility is surrounded by low activity concrete shielding to meet the strict limits given by the national nuclear regulators for unconditional release of wastes from nuclear facilities in the environment. The efficiency as a function of photon energy will be calculated for different types of wastes using the Monte Carlo (MC) method. The MC model of the facility was validated using reference materials and standard sources traceable to national standards for radionuclides activity of several European metrology institutes
